My Students

The development of early language and reading skills are critically important to the academic success of urban/inner-city students. My students are no different. 100% of my students are eligible to receive free breakfast and lunch, indicative of the high rate of poverty in their neighborhood. But this is not ALL that they are...

My students are inquisitive, open-minded boys and girls who would greatly benefit from opportunities to extend their learning and enhance classroom experiences.

These enthusiastic, curious and creative little people are eager to learn about everything, including MUSIC!

In my music classroom we practice using language arts skills while singing, and learn how the music we listen to can be used to tell stories and learn about our history.

My Project

For most musicians there tends to be one song or one concert that was both influential and inspirational in their decision to pursue music as a career. The harmonies, the melodies, the instrumentation and the arrangement of the notes delivered to the ear by a master musician provide the baseline against which all other music and musicians are measured and valued.

Music leaves a long-lasting impression on the hearts, ears and minds of the listener.

The connection to the emotions evoked by music depend largely on our connection to the meaning and purpose of the music. I want to give my students the opportunity to learn about the meaning and purpose of music through learning the history of some of the most inspirational and influential genres of western music: folk, gospel, blues and jazz. My choir learns to sing all of these types songs in class, but rarely gets to spend much time discussing or exploring the history of that music.

My project, a trip to see a live musical based on the history of music in the African-American tradition, will help my students to better understand the great impact that music has had on the lives of American audiences.
