Help me give my students the writing supplies needed to be successful second grade authors and illustrators with editing tools, storage and labeling containers, and individual writing spots!
Second graders simply love to read! But, when it comes to WRITING, it's much more complicated! Reading and writing are so interconnected. The students are so proud of their final writing products when they get to the published version, but it takes a lot of thinking, processing, editing and finalizing to get to that end point.
The look on their excited faces when they can read their personal stories back to the class and bring them home to share with their parents is priceless!
Reading is their way to understand the world around them. But, writing is the next step where students produce their own thoughts, facts, fantasies, poems, and more to share back with the world around them. I tell my students' parents every year, that writing is the culmination of so many important foundational skills--phonics, sounding out, spelling patterns, sight words, brainstorming ideas, using punctuation and capitalization, grammar skills, and story telling, that are all put together to make a finished product.
This project is set up to help my students be successful in the writing process. Some supplies are for organizing existing writing supplies, others are for organizing the requested items. The pens are for the editing process we use: green for checking correctness of spelling, blue for circling capital letter and ending punctuation in sentences, red for adding details to their stories, and purple for adding additional ideas or sentences. The other supplies will be used to protect our writing process cards (i.e. better choice word lists, sight word lists, beginning/middle/ending lists for story structure, and transitional words and question stem lists) into the protective sheets for students to access whenever needed.
