My students need six soft seats, crayons, pencils, stuffed animals, and assorted books for classroom Quiet Corner where they can learn more about kindness and tolerance.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend a Pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade elementary school in New York. Our school is located in an area with a very high concentration of poverty. Most, if not all, of my students are eligible for free lunch.
Although my students are just first graders, they have made tremendous progress this year.
No doubt, my students are continuing to make progress both academically and behaviorally. Providing them with essential resources will enable them to think, respect, and value others
My Project
"Watch your thoughts; they become words.
Watch your words; they become actions.
Watch your actions, they become habits. Watch your habits, they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny." ~ Frank Outlaw.
My students are often told, "Do the right thing," but often require tangible rewards to reinforce and instill behaviors and habits of mind to respond appropriately to conflicts. For our Quiet Corner, my students need soft pads to sit on, an assortment of books about kindness and tolerance, crayons, pencils, pencil grips, paper, Play-Doh and soft plush animals to help them deal with difficult emotions. This area will also be a place for them to just sit and read books such as Each Kindness, the award winning book by Jacqueline Woodson or The Invisible Boy. These books and resources will make the Quiet Corner a place where they can sit, reflect, write or draw.
With your support, my students will have an attractive display sign inviting them into The Quiet Corner, a respectful and peaceful place in our classroom where they can deal with difficult emotions or read a calming book about being kind or tolerance.
Robert John Meehan said, "Too many students don't know what success feels like, thus repeated failure is no longer scary or painful, it's become the new norm. Help create them new a norm."
