The Puzzling World of Tangrams & Pentominoes

My Students

Scott Kim once said that his goal as "a puzzle designer is to create a meaningful experience for the player, not just 'I solved it.'"

I have the pleasure of serving and supporting cognitively gifted students from Kindergarten through 6th grade who thrive when faced with meaningful learning experiences and hands-on explorations.

My students are passionate about learning, and I strive to encourage and enrich their personal passions each and everyday. We love diving into new topics, identifying questions, and crafting our own solutions. We are working hard to become better explorers, engineers, scientists, community members, and puzzle solvers!

My Project

Like all students, gifted learners need learning experiences and opportunities that are rich and inspiring. They need content that is relevant to their lives, activities that cause them to process important ideas at a high level, and products that cause them to grapple with meaningful problems and pose defensible solutions. In my gifted classroom, I do this by building upon grade level curriculum to create enhanced learning opportunities that encourage my students to broaden their horizons, question what they think they know, and defend their thinking.

Hands-on pentominoes and tangram kits will support my classroom goals as they will encourage my students to explore the exciting world of geometry and build their own understanding through hands-on explorations while also encouraging them to use teamwork and critical thinking skills as they explore, innovate, and reinvent the world around them.

The pentominoes and tangram puzzles will appeal to my students as they will be able to physically manipulate the different puzzle pieces as they explore and build their knowledge. While students are having fun, they will also be working to improve their geometric learning, such as spatial reasoning, problem solving and visual skills. My students will be challenged to think about learning in a different way as the puzzles work to help them solidify concepts and encourage deeper understanding. Through the introduction of pentominoes and tangrams kits, my students will be provided with the opportunity to manipulate, problem solve, and promote creativity, all must-haves in a gifted classroom!
