Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our amazing students love science and learning about the natural world. However because they come from lower income families and families that do not speak English, many don't have books to read, educational toys at home, or experiences visiting science museums. This lack of background knowledge can make learning about science more difficult. They have big dreams of careers in STEM fields and potential to make those dreams come true. More than 80% of our students are on free or reduced lunch.

After Hurricanes Irma, Harvey, and Maria, families from Hurricane-ravaged Caribbean countries, especially Puerto Rico, are now at our high-Hispanic/ELL population school, staying with relatives and loved ones as they transition to the US.

I want them to feel successful as they make this transition and prepare for the future!

My Project

Each year I teach difficult weather concepts such as air pressure, humidity, and wind speed. These concepts along with knowledge of clouds, fronts and types of precipitation build the basic knowledge needed to predict the weather. The most difficult of these concepts is air pressure. You can not see, feel, smell, taste or hear air pressure so we can not observe it firsthand. Student have a very difficult time trying to understand air pressure.

These weather tools enable students to see first hand the effects of air pressure.

They will be able to experience both air pressure and the absence of air pressure. This is a critical prerequisite to understand how air pressure drives our weather. Our weather labs will now include hands-on materials that will clearly demonstrate what air pressure is and how it affects our daily weather.
