My students are filled with QUESTIONS!!! Every day I field dozens and dozens of questions that range across the various subjects that we cover and beyond. My favorite questions are the ones that they come up with when they discover a new word in a book or lesson. Often we pause our class and discuss that word. We talk about how the word sounds, how it is spelled, what words are similar to that word, what context the word is used in, and ultimately we discuss what we think it means. Then, I let them discover the meaning of that word on their own. We are lucky to be a Digital One to One school, so all of us have a laptop to look up the word, but there is something satisfying and amazing about flipping through a dictionary, searching for your chosen word, like a miner after gold. Help me give my students that pleasure by helping supply them with a class set of Dictionary/Thesaurus combo!
These books will give my students the ability to dig into a book in order to find the meaning to the new and exciting words that we encounter in our classroom. So often in today's world we whip our our phones and quickly google the meaning of a word. While this is a powerful tool, it removes some of the curiosity and excitement of having to hunt for the meaning of a work.
With these dictionaries, young scholars will learn the joy of hunting for a word by hand.
The excitement of racing against their classmates to be the first one to locate the word.
