My students need 10 children's dictionaries, index cards, chart paper and pencils to build their reading, writing, listening and speaking vocabularies.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"The more articulate one is, the more dangerous words become." - May Sarton
My students attend a Pre-K to grade 5 elementary school in New York.
Our school is located in the poorest congressional district in the nation. Many of my students are not reading on grade level and require additional academic support to improve their reading skills.
My Project
My students will use the resources to expand their reading, writing and speaking vocabularies. They will use the dictionaries to define new words as they are introduced in literature and inquiry circles. They will use the index cards to write the new vocabulary word on one side and the definition, part of speech, variations with part of speech, and an example sentence on the other side.
Having their own personal index cards to refer to as they expand and build their vocabularies with words they are expected to know will help them access and understand complex texts.
These essential resources will not only support them as they read, but will serve as reference tools when they are writing as well. Your donation to this project will be instrumental in teaching my students a simple, but basic truth--words have POWER!
