The Power of Students' Words

Help me give my students the tools to make lasting soft-cover books of their stories and plays about the power of words. These works will be shared with our elementary students as part of our district's anti-bullying campaign.

My Students

Our small high school is located in central Illinois. My students are bright, generous, and creative. They have studied dramatic and nonfiction works about the power of words to harm or heal. Because of this, my students want to make a difference, and they want to make that difference here and now by sharing their experiences with younger students.

My students want to take their own ideas about the power of words and translate them into academic and artistic works for our elementary and middle school students who are struggling with many of the same feelings and issues.

My students are the impetus for this project, and I am so proud of them for thinking about helping other kids. They are writing one-act plays and children's books to help our younger students understand the power of words and how we choose to use them to hurt or heal.

My Project

In Advanced English 1 and 2, my students study the power of words though dramatic works like Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" and Rostand's "Cyrano de Bergerac". They also learn about the power of words to dehumanize through Holocaust-era nonfiction works like "Night" by Elie Wiesel and "In My Hands: Memories of a Holocaust Survivor" by Irene Gut Opdyke. All of these texts ask essential questions about words and what can be created or destroyed because of them.

My students want to take their own ideas about the power of words and translate them into academic and artistic works for our elementary and middle school students who are struggling with many of the same feelings and issues.

My students plan perform their one-act plays and read their books to our younger students. Additionally, the books they make through this project will be durable enough for our libraries to lend them out to students and families.
