Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year I'm working as an intervention teacher so these kids have to do both online classes with their regular teacher and then show up for group sessions with me. My 30 sixth graders come from low-income families. They are first-generation students who mainly speak Spanish. The majority of them live in multi-family homes sharing rooms with multiple siblings. Most of them have a hard time finding a quiet place to do online classes but they still show up with smiles on their faces and ready to learn. They are really happy with just the basic necessities of life. Their joy for life is contagious.

My Project

We need engaging ways to keep our kids motivated during these difficult times. I am requesting books that my kiddos will read. They need books that they can see themselves in, so they can be inspired and strive. It is very important for children to see their lives and the lives of others reflected in the literature they read. These stories they can actually relate to. They love Diary of a Wimpy Kid and books they can relate to. I want to make reading fun and enjoyable. By having the materials the students love and want, it motivates them to read.

Books are one of the best ways to expose our children to language and culture

I would like to increase the number of books available for our kids. Unfortunately with everything going on our children have less access to books than ever before. They need more reading materials. Children who develop a passion for books tend to score higher. Please help me add these books to our reading list.
