This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are ELL learners and live in a low-income neighborhood. The closest library to their home has moved location and is much smaller than before. Many of my students are not aware of the new location and has decreased the amount of reading time at home. Our school does have a library where classes have the opportunity to visit and borrow books. As we borrowed books I realized my students' interests in books such as graphic novels, characters books, nonfiction books, and etc. They enjoyed reading books on interesting facts and sharing with other classmates. I love the enthusiasm my student show when learning new information from their reading books.
My Project
As a child, I remember the pure enjoyment of book shopping every morning for new books to take home to read. My teacher had baskets filled with books of different genres that appealed to every child. Once I became a teacher I wanted to create a classroom library just like the one I grew up with. I wanted to fill baskets with books that made students excited about reading and expose them to new authors, and genre. My students love to read books about adventure, magic, mystery, history, and much more. As I complete my fourth year of teaching, I have learned that students enjoy reading books that involve topics of interest. Over the years I have been building a library that includes each of my students' interests.
If I'm able to create an enriched classroom bilingual library, it will encourage students to read more at home and in school.
Studies have shown that students will also improve reading level when they have the opportunity to read books that spark their interest. This year many students enjoyed reading characters books, graphic novels, and scary books. However this year I didn't have enough for all my students in my classroom. This project will allow all students to borrow more books of their interest.
