My Project
Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds is one of the most impactful novels I have ever had the pleasure of reading and teaching. This book delves into the mind of a 15 year old boy grieving for the loss of his brother. The main character, Will, must decide if he should carry out revenge against who he think murdered his brother, Shawn. Along the way, people from his past come out to convince him to either seek revenge, or ignore "the rules" of the neighborhood.
This novel explores the themes of loss, grief, and societal norms in a way that is accessible to all, especially through the graphic novel.
I am hoping to use this class set specifically with my freshmen class to help them find a love of reading. This novel also has significant themes of gang violence and familial ties that will really speak to my students.
