Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are part of an after school choir that meets once a week. They live in the Bronx, NY and attend a public elementary school where there is currently no music program as part of the school day curriculum. The after school choir allows for music not only to enrich the lives of our students but opens up an outlet for their creative expression to come out. Many of our students come from immigrant families and the music is an inspiring way for them to connect with each other, as well as, other cultures through the teachings of different genres of music.
Music for our students is an hour every week where they can let their guard down and let their self-expression take center stage.
It is an inspiring way for them to connect with one another and create a space where creativity, friendship, and hard work all come together. We are grateful for what we have created and we are always looking for ways to grow and expand our shared love of music.
My Project
American Young Voices is an all-inclusive educational program designed to use music to develop 21st-century skills such as communication, collaboration, creativity, mindfulness, and innovation. This musical journey culminates at Prudential Center in New Jersey where thousands of students come together as a massive chorus. At an American Young Voices concert, our students are the stars! Through music, the American Young Voices program strives to inspire a love of music through classroom education and participation, culminating in massive arena concerts. It is also aimed at engaging students grades 2-5 with a diverse range of music arranged especially for them. We educate students of any ability level in an inclusive group environment.
