This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are English language learners who come from diverse cultural backgrounds. Many of them are navigating the complex process of learning a new language while also trying to better understand who they are and where they fit into the world. Through this project, I aim to help my students explore their personal identities and strengthen their language skills by incorporating sight words into lessons that also prioritize mental health and self-awareness.
By using sight words—simple, high-frequency words that form the foundation of reading—we will create activities and discussions that not only help students improve their language proficiency but also allow them to reflect on their sense of self.
The lessons will encourage students to make connections between the words they learn and their own experiences, fostering both linguistic growth and emotional intelligence. For instance, words like "family," "home," "hope," and "friend" will be used to spark conversations about their values, dreams, and the things that make them feel safe and understood.
Incorporating mental health into these lessons is essential. Many students face anxiety and uncertainty as they navigate new environments, languages, and social dynamics. By creating a safe space for self-expression and reflection through language learning, we can help students build resilience, boost their confidence, and enhance their emotional well-being. This project will include visual aids, storytelling activities, and mindfulness exercises that help students feel more grounded in their learning and more connected to their peers.

By fostering a classroom environment that celebrates both identity and wellness, we can help our students succeed academically while nurturing their mental health and self-awareness.
