This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
So why Math and Literature? Students love stories! They love reading with others and want to share their love with younger students in the school community, to expand their ideas about what math is about by a community service project that helps younger students to love math and see it in the world around them. Stories can give context to math ideas and connect to students background and real world experiences. Literature introduces math concepts in non-threatening ways and builds interest. Good stories make math come alive and children find that math isn’t boring or inaccessible. Mathematics within stories provides context that illuminates the meaning of otherwise abstract concepts, which can be especially helpful for struggling learners as well. Literature connects math to real life and gives meaning to “why” math is important. There are so many reasons math and literature pair so well together. The students in our school-wide Math WIN program are striving to help other students through community service to the entire school community, improve their math learning and boost their confidence. My students believe that math is not about just memorizing facts, but about looking for patterns in the real world around them. By building a collection of books, upper grade students can pair with a younger students to read to them and help them see that math is all around us. Math is a beautiful subject and my students would like to help other students build their love and confidence in both reading and math by building a library of books to share and read with the school community so younger children and families can find joy in both Mathematics and Literacy.
