This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Working in a self-contained classroom comes with different student needs and wants. I work with students with behavioral needs, which include alternative behaviors we need to teach such as taking a break. Providing a calm down corner for students having a hard day or in need of a quiet space, allocates a safe space in the classroom for students to go take a break when needed.
Flexible seating such as those chosen in this project will go towards creating a safe calm down corner where students can choose between a bean bag or a giant comfy pillow to sit on during their break.
In addition, a classroom carpet with allocated spaces to sit will help my students be aware of where to sit in the front of the classroom. Moving away from the desk and chair allows an opportunity for students to be aware and respect each others space (each student will have a circle on the carpet). Overall, flexible seating provides students with the opportunity to find their best spot to stay calm, focused and attentive.
