The Power of Digital Publishing...A Gateway for English Language Learners!
Help me give my students classroom supplies to support project-based learning activities and publishing while working in cooperative groups enhancing their communicative skills in English.
Our school is situated within the Urban Metropolis of Miami in Liberty City, serving students from various cultural and racial backgrounds. As a instructor I strive to find the potential in all students. I have the pleasure of working with a dynamic group of English language learners originating from 10 countries in grades 9 through 12.
Every child has capabilities, talents, and strengths; sometimes, all it takes is motivation and access to instructional resources.
A large percentage of my students have been in the United States less than six months; many of which are limited in the English Language. These unique learners continuously put forth a willingness to acquire the English language and have a motivation to learn. The students I have the pleasure of working with strive for success and independence. They all continually make an effort to improve in all aspects of their learning.
My Project
These classroom resources will continue to enhance the process of acquiring English for students in my English Language Learning Program. During our after-school tutorial sessions I strive to create an environment that supports communication via digital publishing an project-based learning. My students really enjoy utilizing computers to support their completion of assignments and they often require printing capabilities. All of these resources have been chosen with my students in mind- as I have watched them over this last year and noticed that our tutorial resource room lacked the tools for them plan, organize, and publish their assignments. Moreover, when students have test preparation and mathematical components we lacked hand-held calculators to assist in computing or checking work for accuracy.
With these classrooms resources students will be able to choose materials, as needed, to assist in increasing their abilities to becoming English Language Learners and independent thinkers.
Students will be able to use the large post-it posters while engaged in project-based learning while in groups or the smaller post-its when commenting on articles from our local newspapers and magazines. They will also be able to print out their homework assignments or publish their creative writing samples with sufficient printer paper and ink for our resource room printer. The best way to increase language acquisition is for students to utilize their reading, writing, and speaking abilities, all while acquiring new skills which will continue to help my students grow stronger in their communication.
