The Power of Computer Science

I need to attend Pathfinders Summer Institute because my students have been asking/begging to learn how to design apps.

My Students

"I got it!" she yells looking up from her computer during our Technology Class. The class excitedly runs over to her. She clicks start on her program. She has just figured out the code that will trigger an event which needed to occur only when multiple conditions had been met. She is 8 years old and she is designing her first game. Her peers point and I can hear the "oohs" and "ahhs" and the demands of needing to know how she did it. She proudly talks them through her code. They ask questions, make suggestions, then run back to their computers to try the algorithm for themselves. I remind them to walk for the thousandth time but I smile as I say it. I smile because their excitement is contagious. I smile because this is what learning should look like. I smile because I know in the realm of computer science, this is only the beginning...

My Project

Do you remember asking/begging your teacher to teach you something when you were in school? I myself can't recall a time and yet, my students, my amazing, talented, creative, brave, persistent students ask me every day, "When are we going to make Apps?". My students start taking Computer Science with me when they are in Kindergarten. I have first graders who can't read yet, but they can read Python. By the time they get to 3rd grade, these kids are yearning to create and share their talent, ideas, and their solutions with the world through app design. App design is something I have yet to dabble in and would love to be able to teach. I applied for the Pathfinders Summer Institute, got approved and now I just need to raise the funds in order to attend. I'm halfway there which means my students are halfway to fulfilling their dreams of making their own apps. When a student takes ownership of their education and asks you to guide them, to teach them how to make their dreams come to life, that, dear donors, is something spectacular. That is something I can't turn away from because that is how we change lives. That is the power of Computer Science.
