My Project

Our classroom already has nonfiction cookbooks about other cultures and identities. Our classroom does not have book which emphasize caring for others through empathy.

Our classroom needs highly engaging books that the students will be able to use to see the world through the eyes of another person, particularly someone that comes from a different place in the world than them.

Books serve as powerful tools for cultivating compassion in students. Books provide students empathy for their friends through the diverse perspectives presented in literature, students gain insight into the lives, struggles, and triumphs of characters from various backgrounds. This exposure encourages empathy and broadens their understanding of human experiences beyond their own.

Books such as Ohana Means Family, will encourage student to immerse themselves in the lives of fictional characters, they practice seeing the world through different lenses. This skill of perspective-taking strengthens their ability to empathize with others in real-life situations, fostering compassion and tolerance.

Many of the books requested feature characters who demonstrate acts of kindness, empathy, and generosity. By witnessing these behaviors, students learn by example and are inspired to emulate such actions in their own lives, thereby cultivating a culture of compassion.

Students will use colored pencils and blank notebooks to express what compassion looks, feels, and sound like. When students can confidently express what compassion means to them, then unity in our classes will be stronger.
