Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title I school, meaning that most qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and I am constantly looking for ways to provide our students the tools they need to be successful. Our students, as diverse as they come, offer a wide variety of strengths and gifts, and they inspire me every day. Since I came here one year ago, I have seen many positive changes on our campus in the student culture—and I believe that having library time to look forward to helps with the students' day to day, considering what adversity they might endure in their lives. Our campus also hosts special education and a social skills program (E.D. students). I am looking to accommodate ALL students on my campus.
My Project
As a librarian, I understand that not every student will have a strength in reading—so it is important that I create a space and opportunity for them to feel relaxed while approaching a task that may otherwise seem daunting. Students feel more empowered when they have a choice in their environment; with flexible seating, a student can find what is most comfortable for them to best enjoy their library experience, enhancing their body awareness. Students will be able to practice working with others and following directions with the implementation of flexible seating. Additionally, an uncomfortable student is a distracted student, and I want students to completely engross themselves in their library experience to better their academics.
I am hoping to receive the following items, which all would allow students to sit comfortably to enjoy their reading, wobble cushions, balance balls, and flex-space giant comfy pillows.
