it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember what it was like to have a parent or teacher read a great book to you? Such experiences build a love of reading and enhance children's listening, speaking, and reading skills. A Read-Along Listening Center has the same power to enrich children’s learning experiences.
I generally have a very diverse group of students.
This upcoming year, I will have students whose families come from Mexico, India, the Philippines, Korea, and various parts of the United States. Thirteen of them are English language learners (ten speak Spanish, two Punjabi, and one Korean.) Most of my students come from working class families whose parents have limited educations. A few come from households where one or both of the parents have professional degrees.
According to their first grade teachers, they are hard workers and extremely eager to learn.
My Project
A Read-Along Listening Center will add life and depth to my students' reading experiences. Research shows that listening to stories being read out loud benefits students in a number of ways. First, hearing a narrator read a story as they follow along in their book will provide my students with a model of proper phrasing and fluid reading. They will get to see and hear the words on the page come alive in a fluid, expressive way. As they hear stories read out loud and follow along they will also enhance their sight word and academic vocabulary. For students who are just beginning to read, including my English learners, a listening center will allow them to have access to higher text levels. They will be able to hear and read stories that they would not be able to read on their own. Last, because read-along stories include music, sound effects, and multiple narrators who embellish their reading by using silly or dramatic sounding voices, they help build a love of reading
A Read-Along Listening Center is a powerful tool for universal access.
In a classroom of twenty-four students, the amount of time I can spend helping students build their reading skills is limited. Because a listening center provides many of the benefits of reading with me, it is a valuable tool that will enhance my students’ reading experiences.
