My students need binders, file folders, and backpacks for school. They are refugee students who often come to school with no supplies. We want them to succeed!
My ESL students are amazing. They come to this country, learn a new language, math, Science and continue to help their family adapt to a new culture and place. I teach my 7th/8th graders for ESL Language Arts and Social Studies for 2 periods.
My ESL students come from all around the world.
I have 25 students speaking 18 different languages. My class is very fluid with students come at all different times of the year. Many have not been in school due to refugee camps, moving and helping their family. So we start with the basics add in a lot of life skills like how to read directions to make Macaroni and Cheese to ordering a hamburger for the first time.
They are amazing how they are eager to try new things and trust me to help them.
I had one student who read his first book as a 8th grader, "Hop on Pop". It took us months to make it but now he is a reader! That is power. They are the game changers for their family.
My Project
For my students having a new backpack, file folders or new binder like the other students helps them to have confidence and feel like everyone else when they have so many differences with language, culture and race.
There is power in having something new that you can call your own and be responsible for.
We provide all the ESL students with everything they need for school, books, binders, backpacks, pencils, paper and gym clothes.
There is power in a tag on a new back pack or binder.
These students are the game changers for their families. Why not instill as much self confidence as you can to help them succeed. I see my students walk a little taller and feel like they can do it!
