Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come from every corner of the world. My students are all English Language Learners (ELLs), and are a microcosm of Queens: they speak over a dozen languages and come from more than 20 countries. What unites us is a common pursuit of opportunity and community. This past year has hit us hard in so many ways. It made our strength - project-based collaboration - so difficult. Remote learning, social distancing, students juggling work and school to make ends meet: all conspired to keep us feel as distant as we were physically.

During the height of New York's infections in spring 2020, our school and their families were hit the hardest of any area in the country: Several staff and many students were infected.

We lost a staff member, and many students lost family to COVID-19. As the pandemic wanes, we all look forward to the day we will be together again.

My Project

Several years ago, we built a tower garden with the help of Donorschoose. Each year, we've used it to grow herbs and lettuce that students plant, take care of, then take home. This past year it didn't get used at all because we were fully remote. I know our tower garden will be more important than ever when we return this fall.

Taking care of plants and having a green classroom will help students feel welcome and be part of our nurturing community.

The herbs and vegetables we grow will feed them and their families. The materials I am requesting will upgrade our tower garden to use energy efficient lights, grow more plants than before, and keep them growing strong this year and into the future. We need your help to keep our tower garden running better than ever in this pivotal school year.
