The Point of the Pencil Matters

Help me give my students quality pencils that don't break and a reliable pencil sharpener that doesn't jam, so students can get back to making mistakes in writing and math - and learning from them!

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Boy, do I think my students are great! They are funny, creative, and professional. They come to school with uniforms and a desire to learn. The school is located in a community with many social and economic disadvantages. Our elementary school is considered the jewel of our neighborhood.

Each of my students is a precious jewel needing a polish to shine brightly.

Nearly all of my students are English Language Learners. They receive free or reduced-price lunch because our school is a Title I school that teaches PreK-5th grade. It is the central hub of the neighborhood, with a family center on our campus and a great field to play sports on.

Every day I am excited to enrich the lives of my students. I know my teaching is making a difference. For students who are already at a disadvantage in terms of language proficiency, I use a lot of strategies to highlight oral language retention.

My Project

Pencils are the number one (sorry, #2) manipulative tool used every day by students in elementary school. Alas, students in my class use low-quality pencils that immediately break their tip the moment pencil is put to paper. To make matters worse, the pencil sharpener in our class jams relentlessly, leaving students with a broken pencil that can't be resharpened.

With this project students will be able to quickly grab a pre-sharpened, high quality pencil from a reliable storage container, with access to a sturdy pencil sharpener that will not jam.

This basic need of having access to a writing tool that is reliable and useful cannot be understated. From processing arithmetic to note taking during social studies, the goal of this project is for students to regain faith in their pencils, so they can learn, thrive, and lead!
