Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a larger urban elementary school in a neighborhood in Chicago. It is located in the Southwest side of Chicago. The majority of my school is low-income. My school is located in a vibrant community in which parents and community share strong ideals. The neighborhood has it's own struggles of gang violence, poverty, and graffiti.
I teach a wide range of students.
The majority of my students are Hispanic and Spanish speaking. Many of my students are English Language Learners. I also teach students of various learning levels. Some of my students are classified as Special Education, some of my students are more accelerated and some are striving to meet their grade level requirements.
My Project
Poetry is a large and important part of my 6th grade curriculum. My students participate in a DePaul writing mentorship program in which the students are partnered with college students and create their poems. The mentors help guide the students on how to revise their poems and come two times to our school to personally meet with the students about their poems. Last year we held a Poetry Slam in which the students were able to showcase their poems. We also attended a Poetry event at the University of Chicago Logan Theatre in which our students presented poems as well.
For many of my students writing can be difficult, however many of the students enjoy working on poetry.
The students have had a lot of painful experiences in which they are able to put their pen to paper and reflect on these experiences.
My students enjoy listening to read alouds and sharing the experience of reading the same book. They are also interested in reading new young adult books in which they can relate to the teenager's experiences. The Poet X is one of these types of books. My classes will read this book during our Reading classes and then during the Writing periods the students will be creating their poems.
