Help me give my students access to a variety of plays including some classics, as well as some of the most popular shows currently produced in US high schools, with enough copies for in-hand scene work.
At our high school, theatre is a reviving program. We are in an expansion phase and my students need all the support can muster to help them learn in this growing phase. We are trying to establish CTE pathways both in performance and in production skills. I have a wide range of students in both theatre classes as well as the after school program, which strives to provide live theatre to the whole of our isolated community.
The students most impacted by this program are those interested in theatre production and performance, but every theatre student will benefit by having this content available!
The first district I taught in produced 3 shows each year at each of two high schools. There were 5 more high schools within 20 minutes drive, plus 3 professional venues and a handful of community theatres. Add in 3 Thespian showcase shows per year, and by the time they headed off to college, odds were that a student had seen 50 shows. My current students, over 90 minutes from another theater of any kind, are lucky to know of four shows when they graduate. This project is aimed at narrowing that gap as much as possible.
As mentioned elsewhere, my students' exposure to theatre is extremely constrained by isolation. As they arrive in college, they maybe aware of 1/10th the theatre literature of other incoming HS grads. Just being in 3 shows a year school means 12 plays in a career. We are hoping to add a 2nd...
This addition to our library represents scene work copies of some of the most produced shows in American high schools along with important works from earlier eras and important creators.
With these scripts in hand, my students can workshop a broad range of shows and build their skills and knowledge, both in performance and production and design.
