My Students
Many of our students are culturally and economically disadvantaged, including the many refugee families from several countries who have recently settled in Lewiston, Maine. Our students depend very heavily on the school library for their reading materials. Access to the public library is not easily available to many.
Our students love to read and look forward to new and exciting books. Their favorites are often those where they can connect with the characters and relate to similar problems and experiences.
My Project
Mo Willems' books are not only entertaining to the students but also teach a valuable lesson in sharing and friendship. These books teach everything from patience to including someone new into the group. Eyes grow wide and smiles appear when the students see a new title. These books never remain on the library shelves.
Each book is a great read-aloud and encourages discussion and response from the students! Older students use the Piggy and Gerald books as a model for writing their own stories about school staff, like Don't Let Mrs. ______ Stop Cooking or Mr. _______ Gets a New Broom.
