My students amaze me daily with their desire to learn and their thirst for knowledge. They exemplify the bright future that awaits us all. They have a thirst for knowledge, a determination for greatness.
They actively seek quality literature; however, they cannot access it due to the coronavirus pandemic which has shut down our campus.
This unfortunate situation hinders my students' access to books and literature and children should never be denied the opportunity to lose themselves in a great book.
Before the closure of school due to Covid-19, I was reading The One and Only Ivan to my class. My students looked forward to the end of the day to hear the adventures of Ivan, Bob, Stella, and Ruby. The fact we had not completed the novel was a major concern for them, so I read the book online for them daily. My students tuned in daily as I completed the story and it helped them through this stressful time. When I saw that there was a sequel to The One and Only Ivan, I knew The One and Only Bob would bring comfort to them during this stressful time.
The One and Only Bob is a story that not only demonstrates how characters are shaped by the events of unfortunate circumstances, it also teaches the importance of friendship - lessons that empower children to be better.
In addition, The One and Only Bob will bring a smile to my children's faces and lift their spirits at a time when they need it most. They are third graders who miss their routine, their school, their class, their friends, and their teacher. This project will put great literature in the hands of my students which will enable us to read together (virtually), share a common experience, and pretend for a moment we are back in the comfort of our class with our friends.
