My Students

My students are learners and thinkers who push their education to the furthermost reaches of their abilities. My students come from around the Highlands Ranch area, and we are the most diverse middle school in Douglas County. We have been navigating the "new" way we do school with all the changes that have happened in the past 2 years, but my students still savor the opportunity to hold a book in their hands and read as a class, despite the circumstances.

It is an amazing feat to see students take to reading a novel and have it change the way that they think of the world, and how they see themselves in it.

This has always been a primary goal for me as a teacher, and I can say, with wholeheartedness, that I've seen my students be transformed from reading a novel, thinking and talking about it, and spending time with the subject matter. In this day it is vital that my students make connections to their lives and the literature we read. It's truly a wonderful process that is both inspiring and breathtaking.

My Project

The goal of the unit around society and the individual is to explore how each student fits into society today and how the concepts of free will, determinism, and existentialism help to explain that students place in society. By using the novels The Giver and Gathering Blue students will have an opportunity to read two fiction novels that focus on this exact topic the individual in society. By exploring Jonas and Kira's stories students will see societies that have flaws and how these characters found themselves outside the expected society.
