Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade at a small, early childhood school in the Tremont section of the Bronx. All of my students come from low income families and nearly all are eligible for free lunch. I teach math with the Everyday Math curriculum that is required in New York City. While this curriculum provides many beneficial mathematical experiences for my students, it does not consistently meet the needs of the wide range of students in my classroom. I am constantly searching for activities that either provide extra challenges for my advanced students or provide reinforcing extra practice to my struggling students, and often I do not have appropriate activities that my students can do independently. The "Help-Yourself Math Lab" would provide materials and "do-it-yourself" activities on a wide range of levels that my students could use in order to get the most out of every math period. These activities cover the breadth of our math curriculum, and range from a kindergarten to third grade level, making it perfect for my first graders' needs. Using this kit, my students could learn to add and subtract, understand place value and fractions, tell time, and count money- the foundation of mathematics in first grade! By providing this resource for my students, I could be sure that each and every student in my classroom is challenged and supported each and every day, and that every students becomes a successful mathematician.
