My Students

My kindergarten students are emerging bilinguals as they are learning and speaking every day in both English and Spanish!

My kids have big hearts, curious minds and enthusiasm for learning new things.

We are part of a small dual language community where both students and staff value cultural and linguistic diversity. We face the challenges of poverty by leaning on and learning from each other. We are a team and a family in our classroom! Every day we are learning what it means to say, "I better my world, I better myself." Thank you for helping us to do both by contributing to our classroom community.

My Project

"Choose the chair that will work best for your body and help you learn best." That is what I said to my kindergarteners at the beginning of each week before they selected their flexible seating. Last year was the first year that I implemented flexible seating in my classroom. It was so fascinating to see what the students chose each week!

I never realized how much a chair could change a students' motivation to engage in learning.

Allowing students to select their own chairs gave them some agency in their education. I loved watching their understanding of their own needs develop as they tried using different chairs. All students have different needs, so it makes sense that the furniture they need to meet those needs would also look different.

Our school district invested in flexible seating last year, but was only able to buy a few chairs for classrooms. These balance ball seats look completely different from any of the other seating I currently have in my classroom! When I saw them, I immediately thought of how they would serve different students needs. Last year, I saw how wobbly chairs helped students who had trouble sitting still in a normal chair to sustain movement and focus simultaneously. A wobbly chair provides more of a side-to-side and circular motion. These balance ball seats give more flexibility for up and down motion. I can think of so many students who would benefit from this option! Plus, they look so cool, so I can just imagine how excited students will be to use them!
