I teach high school Special Education grades 9-12 in a low income rural school district.

In my nine years teaching I have seen several college bound students with disabilities struggle to keep up in class. Often this struggle is not due to inability but rather the pace at which material is delivered. When my students should be translating important information given during a lecture into notes instead they are spending entirely too much time on grammar and their spelling losing focus at the subject at hand. Not saying grammar and spelling is not important but when is causes a student to fall behind because they are obsessed with a particular word or phrase and do not transitions through the notes as the rest of the class does. When faced with the frustration of trying to keep up or playing catch up. Frustration becomes the valor ultimately resulting in my students shutting down and giving up.

I feel with several digital scribes available for student use will in return alleviate a lot of my student’s frustration. The digital scribes would make note taking easier allowing more focus on the subject at hand and not so much on spelling everything right. Plus when it comes to preparing for a test the student has a typed copy of there on hand written notes this will be more visually pleasing to the students. Not only can this tool be used to assist in the note taking process but it can also be used during group activities providing several possibilities to incorporate cooperative learning experiences for our students. Students learn best from their peers and hands on activities this would provide both by allowing the students to work in group and having them place there results on the smart board to share with the entire class giving the students immediate feedback.

As once said by William Shakespeare “We know what we are, but not what we may be” this truly describes my students. They do not know their potential they have always given themselves the unfaltering label of the “special” students. My students feel inadequate with themselves and amongst their peers causing them to have a barrier hard to penetrate. My goal with every student is to teach them self determination. By promoting self determination I will encourage my student to advocate for themselves and envision all of their potential future possibilities. I will inspire my students to dream big challenge themselves to take pleasure in learning. Realizing they have a new label called “gifted”.
