My Project

Help give the students at our high school new YA Novel options for Book Club! Our student based book club picks a new title each month and meets every Friday in the library to fuel up on fiction and food!

This year marks the ninth year that these teens have been willing to voluntarily read outside of class, come to the library during their lunch period, and discuss a book with their peers.

In the past, we have averaged around 10-15 students participating each month, however, we have seen a growing interest in the book club and we now have 25 students who want to be members of the book club this year. In addition to reaching the student population, we have also seen a growing number of faculty members who also participate in the club as a way to connect with the students.

The major struggle our book club has faced has been having enough copies of current and appealing books for the students that they are excited about reading. Within this DonorsChoose project, you will find two different novels for young adults written by a diverse group of award winning authors: “Furia” by Yamile Saied Mendez is a powerful contemporary YA novel set in Argentina about a rising soccer star who must put everything on the line to follow her dreams, and “As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow” by Zoulfa Katouh is a speculative fiction novel set amid the Syrian Revolution.

These novels will help keep our book club students turning the pages by providing them thought provoking and complex characters and conflicts from various cultures to analyze, discuss, and connect with their peers and faculty members.
