This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
It is always a challenge to help students discover books that capture their interests, imaginations, and emotions. "The Outsiders" is a highly engaging book that I teach in class and I haven't had one student tell me they don't like it yet.
My students are 7th graders in Queens, New York.
Students are respectful, curious, and hard working. At my school, the administration and parents are very supportive of literacy and encourage books that will motivate all readers. Reading is strongly supported and we are always looking for ways to improve motivation and reading achievement.
My Project
This novel is our class book for our "Making Decisions" thematic unit where students explore the impact of decisions on one's life. I also bring in alternate texts such as "We Real Cool" by Gwendolyn Brooks and "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost. Students read this coming of age novel in class because we do not have enough copies for children to bring home, but I think I would be able to teach my students so much more if they had the book to take home as well for more reading/writing assignments and so on. I am asking for 80 copies of this book so that my students could have their own copy to read.
This will impact my students' lives because they will learn more from the novel.
By being able to read chapters ahead of time so we can have more in class instructional time to ponder with big ideas, skills, and so on. In addition, my students will be able to complete homework assignments and if students are absent they won't fall behind on the reading.
