This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Garinger High School is a Title I school where over 95% of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Our students are resilient, smart, and caring; however, sometimes the issues they face in their homes that accompany poverty can be hard to combat.
We have an amazing principal who is working tirelessly to build the academic culture at our school and within the community.
Garinger scored in the top 5% of all NC schools in terms of growth. Our students are learning. Teachers simply need the right materials to reach them.
Our tenth grade English team works very closely together in planning rigorous and highly engaging lessons for our students. We have 60 copies of the text The Other Wes Moore, which highlights two men, who share extremely similar backgrounds to our students, whose lives end up dramatically different due to choices and second chances. The text is academically rigorous AND meaningful to our students. Wes Moore will be an inspiration to our students. We simply need more copies!
My Project
Our students come from extremely diverse and often turbulent or struggling situations.
We have built a strong team of 10th grade English teachers who are dedicated to reaching each and every one of our students.
I work on the team to help students as well as coach teachers. One of our biggest obstacles has been having enough of a particular text for all of the students to use at the same time. We can plan together, grade together, and help our students better IF we can all use the same text. I realize The Other Wes Moore is expensive, but not only has he written an academically challenging text, he has shared his struggles and achievements so that our students might look to him for inspiration that could change their lives for the better.
