This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher that is committed to my students’ education, it is extremely important that I do whatever I possibly can to provide learning that is engaging to my students. The amazing third-grade students that I teach live in a high-poverty neighborhood in New York and many of them do not have technology in their homes. Because technology is advancing in our society at an extremely fast pace, I feel that as an educator it is important for me to provide these engaging experiences in our classroom that will not only motivate them to learn, but also prepare and equip them to be active members of our society.
The Elmo that we desire in our classroom is not the tickling kind, and does more than teach students their ABC’s. The Elmo TT-02S teacher’s tool is not a furry red friend but rather is an amazing technological addition to a classroom and is a great presentation aide for classroom lessons. This tool is a high-resolution document camera that captures 3D objects and images on flat paper, so that large groups of people can see smaller visual aids. Similar to (but much more advanced than) and overhead projector, this document camera can display almost any (transparent or opaque) object onto a screen, smart board, PC image display, or TV monitor.
My students would benefit from this classroom addition in many ways, especially because most of my students are visual learners and quickly become disengaged if they cannot see examples of what they are being asked to do. Often during a lesson, students are not able to see the example when we are solving a problem together. Some simply cannot see and others are crawling up with excitement. The Elmo teacher’s tool would allow ALL students to see what is going on during whole-class and small group lessons. It would help them to follow along better during math lessons and see visuals that will help them learn the concepts being taught. It will also help them to be more engaged in literature that I read to them and with them (which would be especially beneficial to my struggling readers). Likewise, it would help them in their writing as they study what other authors do to make their own writing better. It would help them in social studies as they study documents, pictures, and maps to learn about different communities. It would also help them in science as the camera arm adjusts to fit microscope heads. The camera also has many features such as a tablet that allows the teacher to write on it, pass it around to the class and then display information when finished. These are just a few of the endless ways that your help would better the education of my students.
Please help us turn this classroom dream into a reality. My students and I are truly grateful for any help. Thank you for considering this proposal for a document camera.
