The Origins of the Spirit of Ohana in Hawaii

Help me give my students a cultural immersion experience regarding the meaning behind the spirit of Ohana in Oahu, Hawaii; students will need materials to build a diorama of a community and write a story about Ohana life.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Aingel's classroom raised $996

My Project

I once took an archaeoastronomy class as an elective and while studying ancient indigenous cultures I was introduced to the ancient Hawaiian art of wayfinding. Now I find myself teaching kindergarten classes in Hawaii and during the 2023/24 academic year I attended a Teach For America event on wayfinding. As a result, I introduced this cultural topic to my class who ultimately created a diorama of the ocean trek from Oahu to Tahiti by canoe, and co-wrote a play about a canoe rescue at sea using only wayfinding. They presented the play successfully to family and friends at graduation.

This year I would like to bring the focus closer to home and explore the Origins of the Spirit of Ohana in Hawaii.

Students will use STEAM: (1) to build a diorama showing the different structures found in an ancient village such as sleeping structures, cooking structures, and various other structures based on the type of daily work performed i.e., animal farming, fishing, making canoes, etc., (2) to research needs of plants, animals, and human beings (STEM learning centers) and document findings in their lined notebooks, and (3) explore the Hawaiian art of storytelling (mo’olelo), drawing mind maps and illustrations in their blank notebooks. The charades manipulatives are for improving public speaking skills so students can immerse themselves completely in the characters to simulate the oral tradition of storytelling.

Finally, students will create an end product (narrated video/podcast or written text) complete with excerpts containing their original words and illustrations. Each student will receive a gift bag with treats and a book to recognize them for their hard work. The final product may be used as a Spring fundraiser, with a percentage of the profits going to a local charity and a percentage presented as a class gift to the school.
