Have you ever been given a project to do and then told that you will not get all the parts you need to complete it? As you can probably guess, I have. Recently our school district has adapted a new reading program. I really enjoy the program and my students are excited about trying something different. I am told the books we are missing are coming but when I inquired about a cd player, so we can listen to the story, I was told that will not be purchased. During centers, when I get the chance to work with the class in small groups, one of their jobs is to listen to the story on cd. The district has provided us with the cd just no cd player. But hey, I have a cd player I borrowed from a friend. I can plug in some old headphones and problem solved. Did I mention the cd player I borrowed was OLD? On a "good day" you can listen to a story with just a cracking sound in the background. A "not so good day" would be when the group opens their books, put on some headphones, get comfortable, presses play and....NOTHING. No sound, no cracking, no story. My wonderful class of 20 3rd graders just says "oh well" and goes onto something else. I looped up with my class this year. I was their second grade and now third grade teacher. I just love each and everyone one of them. They have terrific spirit despite the hard times they experience at home. Some of them struggle so much with reading but keep trying. Listening to books give them support they need to be successful. I have 3 students that don't speak a word of English but love to listen to stories and look at pictures. Please help me take the "oh well" out of my classroom and provide them with a listening center that will work each and every time.
