My students need high interest novels about the American Revolutionary War.

My Students

My students come from diverse and unique heritages. We spend our year together exploring the ways our points of view are similar and different, and developing a respect for each other's unique ideas and thoughts.

We are a class of flexible seating, so students move and adjust their spot as needed so they can maximize their learning.

We have no desks, but some tables and many cozy spots to collaborate. Each student dreams big, and my job is to push their thinking and pre-conceived limits so they can reach levels they thought were too challenging.

My Project

These novels will greatly impact my classroom and my students' understanding of real life during the American Revolution. "Sophia's War" will give my students the perspective of a girl who was recruited as a spy. Based on true events, this novel artfully transports students into the tense and life-threatening decisions made by young people at the time. "Chains" is told from the point of view of a young, female, African-American slave. This novel gives voice to an often overlooked minority group and their invaluable experiences. By engaging with these stories, students will practice the skills necessary to make meaning of historical fiction as well as deepen their understanding of the sacrifices and harrowing decisions that defined the start of our country.
