My Students

My wonderful preschool students face many struggles: crippling poverty, parental neglect, and domestic violence. Our kids qualify for both Title I funding and Headstart, which means they battle crippling poverty on a daily basis. Some have just arrived in the U.S. We strive to provide a safe, welcoming, and loving environment for our kids, full of enriching experiences. We hope to encourage them daily in their quest to obtain the skills necessary for a successful Kindergarten year.

Often, our greatest challenge is lack of funding for classroom supplies we need to provide enriching experiences for our students.

Parents struggle to meet basic needs, and it is not unusual to get little to no funding at all for necessary supplies.

My Project

Research shows us that children who engage in playing music are more likely to excel in both reading and math. i want to give my students every opportunity to succeed, so I am expanding my large group with the use of musical instruments to challenge my students to create an ostinato (continuously repeating melodic phrase to accompany a song), add sound effects to the reading of picture books, and allow them to create their own melodies. Children have no boundaries of sound that adults sometimes have, so I am looking forward to hearing their original compositions!

An alto xylophone is the perfect instrument to use in our classroom.

The notes are high enough for children to be able to create a melody, and low enough to create accompaniments for our daily songs.
