My Students
My students range from 4th to 6th grades in a mixed-age Montessori classroom. We are a public Montessori charter school and my students get to come to this school based on winning a lottery. We have a diverse community of students in which for many English is their second language. I am trying to create a culture of reading in my classroom by boosting the reading library in the classroom. I have collected a list of recommended informational books for the classroom's book club. These books will be read in the classroom for many years to come and help the students to become life long readers and learners.
My Project
In a mixed-age classroom such as mine, where there is a diverse range of reading skills, having a rich and varied classroom library is the key to run successful book clubs. The books in this project are all Informational Texts. Students must learn the differences between reading fiction as opposed to a non-fiction text.
These books will be used in small reading groups to have explicit guidance about reading non-fiction books.
Students often read informational texts at the same speed as reading a novel. While reading an informational text, the children have to learn to slow down and make sure that they are understanding the information that is presented to them in the text, charts, and captions that are usually features of an Informational Text.
