This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
For six years the library at our school was shuttered due to severe budget cuts. Now, three years after its re-opening, students are rushing in on their breaks, eager to get books. Hurrying to see if a good book has been returned, because there just aren't enough of those to go around.
My students attend a Title 1, inner-city Los Angeles middle school with 720 students, 99% of whom are minorities.
Ninety-one percent of the student body qualifies for free or reduced lunches. Nearly a quarter of the students are learning English.
Reading scores are low at our school, but we are on a mission to change that, by getting every kid a chance to find that "one good book" that will hook him/her on reading.
My Project
Most students at our school are reluctant readers. The library is their primary source for independent reading materials. Typically when the students come to the library with their English classes they are unsure about what they want to read. But once in awhile, they get a recommendation from a friend. Then they rush to the library. When they find out the title is not in our collection, they are crestfallen and rarely willing to consider other options.
This donation request, a compilation of the most requested titles submitted to the library suggestion box, will help build excitement for reading in our reluctant readers.
Studies show that student reading scores improve best when they are able to self-select high-interest reading materials. Having these books will help us in our quest to raise reading scores.
