This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Carpe Diem" means seize the day. Well for me, I prefer Carpe Noctem as a phrase in my class. As a science teacher, I'm a believer in space exploration and understanding the mysteries of space. However, a lack of resources in the area limits our ability to apply our knowledge to the real world.

My students are an amazing group of kids who are all highly motivated and excited to learn about the mysteries of the world.

Whether we are studying the atmosphere, water, life sciences, or astronomy and space, my students are constantly ready to give an amazing effort. My students also thoroughly enjoy working on hands on activities and experiments. Nothing gets them more excited than seeing how the science they've learned applies to the real world. Within the school, we are fighting hard to integrate STEM education in all areas including creating STEM after school clubs and activities. Although we are a low income area, the students are ready to achieve the high expectations we set.

My Project

Space is a difficult concept for students in elementary/middle school to understand. Although we can teach them about the planets, stars, orbits, etc. the abstract idea of space can still be challenging and overwhelming for students to understand. By getting these curricula and telescopes, the students will get the opportunity to immerse themselves into the study of space. Additionally, we will be starting to have a quarterly science night at our school to continue to promote the STEM activities at school. These telescopes will allow us to set up a "Star Party" where families can come to view the unknown together.

Donating to this project will make a huge difference in an area where opportunities to see science in a real world application is non-existent.

Although these students are highly interested in science, being 3 hours from any major science centers causes students to have difficulty to continue to cultivate these interests. Through this project, students will start to get more hands on opportunities to experience science.
