My seventh graders come from diverse backgrounds and home lives, but they come together as a team when it really matters. They are learning the value of goodness as we have kicked off our character education mentorship program this school year. It is called Discovery. The kids have embraced the philosophy of becoming a friend and lending a helping hand. They are arranged in small groups of 5th-8th graders. We focus on key character traits, such as integrity, empathy, gratitude, courage and leadership, among others.
Our small, public middle school took a big risk a few years ago and began a transformation to a personalized learning model.
This means that my students learn at a level that is appropriate for them and work at a pace that is reasonable for them. I am constantly evolving my lessons to meet their needs and interests. One of the biggest things that I need to do this more effectively is a variety of high-interest books at a variety of reading levels. I need to hook young readers rather than raise a generation of test-takers! Help me be the teacher that helps kids fall in love with reading!
My Project
This is my second shot at funding a project. I have prioritized my list to include only the items that I would consider most important for my kiddos.
I teach at a small suburban middle school in Pennsylvania, and we recently transformed our instructional model to a personalized approach to learning.
In my English classroom, students choose books that interest them and base our class activities off of those. I would love to offer a wider variety of resources and current titles.
Additionally, as we do not have a formal vocabulary curriculum, the teacher resource books included in the list will help me to grow stronger readers and writers. Thank you!
