The Need for Headphones is Real!

Help me give my students headphones to use in order to have equal access to the curriculum. Most students in my class struggle with reading and this will help reduce their cognitive load.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have specific needs that must be met and come to class every day with a pleasant attitude. Unfortunately, my students reside in one of the lowest-income areas of Los Angeles. Most of the students in my class are English learners, and some are relatively new to the country. The community consists of mostly Spanish-speaking families and a small percentage of African-American families. I support students in a special day mathematics class that has special needs and is expected to meet grade-level standards. In order to have access to the curriculum, my students need various ways to learn: visually, auditorially, kinesthetically, and/or tactically. They have access to Chromebooks but do not have adequate headphones to help them use technology more efficiently to learn. With technology, they have been able to explore and research information that they are not exposed to in their communities.

My Project

My students will greatly benefit from using headphones with their Chromebooks. Some of the lessons I teach require using an interactive applet online. My school also has a program that focuses on the students' present level and helps close the gap between where the student is and where the student should be based on grade-level standards. Both of these programs have a tool that allows the system to read and even simplify the instructions/questions to the student.

The headphones will help every student in my class have access to the programs online no matter what reading difficulties they may be facing.

My students will be able to focus more on demonstrating mastery of the mathematic target vs focusing more on decoding the words. They will easily be able to have access to headphones and the transition will be smoother vs using tangled-up and used earphones. The headphones will also allow students to focus more on the task because it will block out external noises that easily distract them (i.e. addressing student misbehavior, etc).
