My Project

Music is a universal language. Throughout history, music has bound us together during times of celebration and loss, joy and pain, hope and despair. It weaves a thread through our diverse cultures and unique histories. Music tells a story; it causes us to think and feel deeply. We hear the strains of notes and chords and are transcended to a different time and place, Music knows no language barriers; it reaches the soul. Music changes our perspective, inspires change, and motivates us to action. My gifted students are drawn to new experiences and are always eager to learn more and do more. They are a special group of big thinkers with big feelings who thrive when challenged.

Understanding our place in the history of music helps us consider where we have come from, what we have experienced, and how we can add our own voices to the narrative.

This project centers around the rhythm and beats that shaped our country in the mid and early 1900's. Blues, Jazz, Swing and Soul developed side-by-side and yet individually across our nation. Students will listen to recordings from artists across the country on a new cd player. They will learn to play the harmonica, use rhythm sticks, and practice notes on a keyboard. The classes will read the book, Bud, Not Buddy, and compare music genres. Students will decorate cardboard suitcases to store personal work. The sound system will allow music to be heard across our large room. A room partition will help separate the groups, provide a backdrop from which to perform, and serve as a noise buffer. This project will hopefully culminate in a trip the Grammy Museum in Cleveland, Mississippi.
