My Students

As a special education teacher, my day is with students who have academic, social, and behavioral needs. Many of the students in the "regular" classes also have these same needs, but are not necessarily classified. We strive to make our lessons meaningful to the lives of our students.

I am a middle school special education teacher in Trenton, New Jersey, an urban school district where most of the students are eligible for the free meals program, and many students face great challenges before they even reach my classroom door.

We educate, as well as provide stability and social growth. For many students, we are the only stability they have in their lives. Visits to museums and exposure to any life outside of the city street is very minimal. Many students have not been outside their immediate neighborhood. This project is for the Museum of Interesting Things to set up an interactive presentation at our school. This exhibition will help students understand what life was like before all of the technology they use today was invented. Perhaps this exhibition will inspire more innovation from our students! This visit will reach all of our student body, and each grade will have their own time period to visit the exhibition. This presentation encourages touching, holding, and operating many of the antiques. This is not an experience that we can duplicate through books, videos, or online resources, and I would love to bring this to the students!

My Project

The budget cuts within our district have been significant and do not allow for any extras such as a field trip. Bringing this museum to our school will provide a wonderful creative outlet while educating students in the past and encouraging innovative thinking. The students will be able to see the steps of advancement that resulted in their cell phones, laptops, and CD's. They will understand why and how tasks were much more time consuming in the past and how work has been made much easier. The historian in charge of this exhibition will set up tables in our auditorium and we will schedule the students one grade level at a time (sixth-eighth grades) to see, hold, and operate the antiques and inventions. This will inspire future innovations as well as provide an understanding of how work was completed before their current world of technological advances. The museum has several different specialties - toys, math, medical, literature, household, science, music and photography. We will be incorporating three, which will align with the Common Core standards.

Your donation to this special presentation at our school will provide my very needy students with the experience of a museum.

They will be able to break away from the classroom and have items in their hands. We cannot duplicate this experience through books, videos, or online resources. An understanding of the past and how work was done will be gained by holding and seeing how things operated. Doing this will also spur thinking, questions, and further innovation. Our students are capable of great ideas, but are hindered by poverty and family life.
