Help me give my students the opportunity to participate in mobility activities to strengthen their orientation and mobility skills for travel with the use of curved walking boards, textured balls, and balls with sound.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
The blind child can participate in physical activities just as their sighted peers with the use of textured and sound balls. When a blind or visually impaired student is learning mobility skills to assist them in orienting themselves in their environment, it requires learning different aspects of the movement of their bodies.
As a student learns about body movement and their body awareness in space, they engage in multiple activities to master these skills.
Students use the skills learned through the use of textured balls and balls with sound to train the brain to interpret received information by other senses in place of the sense if sight. We work on different skills by way of using textured materials and balls with sound so the students can learn to how to detect and identify textures or terrain under their feet when traveling with a mobility cane. A blind traveler depends on sounds and textures in their environment to help orient themselves and become independent safe travelers.
When teaching a totally blind individual how to relate to things in their environment for the purpose of orientation and mobility, they cannot see a smooth rock or a bumpy rock. For this reason, we must use other objects with textures that have the characteristics of a bumpy rock. The materials used to teach these skills are very specific to the skill or relation being taught. For this reason, the funding of this project would be very helpful in teaching my blind students to be independent and safe travelers.
