This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the "Morning Show" broadcast at your school? We still run a "Morning Show" from our school library. The equipment in our TV studio probably hasn't changed much from your schooldays. However, with just a webcam and a few new cables, we can run our "Morning Show" from a laptop, 2014-style.

The kids who would directly benefit from this new equipment are the sixth and seventh graders who present the show each day.

Those who would indirectly benefit? The viewers! The viewers are all the students at our K-8 Center. That's over 800 children. Our school is located in South Florida. Most of the students who come here are first-generation Americans. Their parents tend to be immigrants from the Caribbean and South America. They have low-paying jobs in the local tourism industry. The moms and dads don't earn enough, or speak enough English, for our PTA to be well-funded.

My Project

So let's get down to details! What do we need exactly? We want to bypass the clunking VCR that we currently use (when the blessed thing deigns to work, that is) and instead show video from a laptop. Some videos will be live; others will be pre-recorded. We already have a laptop and a digital video camera. What we need are a just a few simple items so that we can use these with our CCTV equipment: some video cables, a webcam for live streaming, and a memory card for the video camera so that we can prerecord news items around campus. I also added one extra item to this project. It's not related to the TV studio. It's a numeric key pad that costs fifteen dollars. This is something that we need to speed up circulation at the library check-out desk.

What difference will this project make?

1) The "Morning Show" will be subject to fewer cancellations due to technical difficulties. 2) Students will be able to see our presenters. Right now, if we used our laptop, they'd only be able to hear them because the laptop is old and doesn't have a built-in camera. 3) Kids will be able to pre-record news sections around campus. In short, these few items will make a tremendous difference!
