My students need these books to increase their academic vocabulary. Also to teach them that perseverance can lead to success, especially when dealing with intrapersonal struggles.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are smart, curious, and eager to learn. Unfortunately, their minds have not been exposed to the vast amounts of rich literature. They are all great readers, but their comprehension can certainly use some fine tuning. Just this year we read 3 novels as a class and I can already see great improvement.
I feel like it is my sole responsibility to continue to expose them to books and challenge them critically on a daily basis.
Some are just beginning to find joy in reading. Some students’ vocabulary has increased dramatically since the beginning of the year.
My Project
We will read the book and analyze the academic vocabulary. We will compare and contrast home Language with the language of the classroom (Language of success). We will create a personal thesaurus and utilize the new vocabulary in our daily conversations. We will analyze the different ways the author SHOWS us what the character is feeling. We will then apply those strategies to our own writing. We will compare and contrast characters, and how the story would be different if told from a different point of view. We will also apply details from the book to learn about WWII and list some causes and effect the war had on children.
