The More You Know, The More You Grow: Social/Emotional Learning

My Students

I am a special education teacher in a small school district just outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Specifically, I provide reading and math support to students, as well as providing behavioral, social/emotional, and adaptive skill support.

My roster includes an extremely diverse group of students in kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and third grade.

Despite the challenges they often face in the school environment, my students are incredibly hard workers. They put so much effort into their learning and love to see the progress they have made!

My Project

My students' social/emotional needs in general have increased tremendously across the past few years, with even more needs becoming apparent after a year and a half of extended remote learning periods due to COVID. Many of my students need direct teaching and very structured opportunities to develop age-appropriate social skills, to understand emotions, and to utilize effective coping skills. Growth in these areas is just as important, if not more important, than growing academically in order to be successful in life. Often times, these are things that children need to work on and improve upon BEFORE they are able to focus on academic learning.

While I have been able to accumulate a nice variety of reading and math materials across the past few years, I am always looking for more ways to incorporate social/emotional learning into my classroom.

Although my students are all very unique, it has become apparent that most learn best through a combination of oral discussion, visual representations, and real-life examples. This is why I am hoping to purchase a selection of picture books to focus on various aspects of social/emotional learning. Topics of the books will include: building self-confidence, bravery, acknowledging and celebrating differences, being kind to others, making good choices, active listening, making and learning from mistakes, impulsivity, recognizing a variety of different feelings/emotions (i.e. frustration, anger, anxiety, etc.), utilizing coping skills, and demonstrating empathy. My plan is to share and discuss these books with my students regularly, while also applying what we've read about and discussed to real-life situations in our classroom, school, and homes. I KNOW that my students will continue to grow into wonderful, young individuals with these materials!
